The Guardian. Not all hierarchies are patriarchies, but it seems the reverse is pretty much the case. All patriarchies rank individuals one above the other according to their relative status, power, or authority – AND their gender. That means in countries like Canada and municipalities like Nanaimo, women are automatically set up to lose. If we really want to create an equitable community for everyone, can we afford to ignore this most basic issue? And, by extension, can we condone the systemic inequalities we routinely see locally?
