Yale Environment 360. A review of three research papers that reach different conclusions on the best way to protect nature and restore what has been lost. They differ regarding “the nature we have, how to conserve it, and the best way to fulfil the UN call to make the 2020s a Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.” In essence, the review asks: Should efforts focus on individual species or ecosystems? Should we try to protect only natural systems or also those engineered by human stewardship? All of which sound terribly abstract until we realize these questions equate to asking whether we should focus on preserving only the few remaining bits of old growth forest or all the rest, as well. In fact, the same questions seem relevant to any microcosm, including the the still natural parts of the City of Nanaimo. And bringing the issue home, don’t each of us need to answer these same questions for ourselves in order to shape the demands we make of the politicians we enable? [ARTICLE LINK]
