The Guardian. July 30, 2021. If you think this article describes a problem existing elsewhere, somewhere other than Nanaimo (or any particular location, for that matter) you might note the mention of this year’s summer heatwave in BC as evidence that we are now standing at the precipice. You might also note the phrase in the subheading “Nothing is more dangerous than the illusion of action.” And you might keep in mind a point the author makes that this crises is independent of political cycles, i.e. independent of the election the federal Liberals are expected to call for this fall. The column gives a good summary of how political inaction looks across a number of parameters, but I’ll add one unmentioned face to the conclusion. Will we really end everything good that humans have developed because of our tendency to delay doing what’s needed on every level of governance – beginning with ourselves? If so, how very, very sad.
