I am one of those members of the electorate guilty of largely ignoring school board elections for almost my entire voting career. At best, I have only taken a quick look at the names, then consulted my wife (who pays more attention to these things than do I), before picking those names I guessed to be the least nefarious. However, as the author of today’s article argues, I should be paying a lot more attention to electing the best school board candidates than that.
School trustees and boards can have significant effect on a community’s children, and, hence, on our collective future. And they can have more immediate educational and non-educational impacts, financial and otherwise, as well.
After reading The Tyee article below, you might wish to begin familiarizing yourself with the candidates running for School Trustee in SD68, Nanaimo-Ladysmith. If so, you can find their nomination documents here.

How Much Power Does a School Trustee Have? A Tyee Election Explainer. The Tyee. September 22, 2022. “School boards set policies, create budgets, hire superintendents. But the education minister can also fire them.”

I see no reason to believe that the electorate is more or less informed this cycle, but I have noticed…
