Capital Daily. July, 24, 2021. A timely opinion piece in a Victoria, BC eNews publication about the trade-off between an urban tree-canopy and development. If we think even a bit past short-term considerations, we recognize that accepting this trade may not be in our best interests. Trees are an important component on which human-sustaining ecosystems depend. If we opt for increasing the immediate, but short-term, benefit of shelter we may lose out in the long-run. As the author points out, a few parks are not enough to compensate for benefits of an urban canopy, particularly one made up of older trees. A lack of trees can only exacerbate the frequency and impact of weather effects like the recent heat dome, and in the longer term, breaks strands in ecosystem webs that are necessary for our own continuing survival.
